The Mya Joy – A Powerhouse Pump in a Petite Package

Hello Mamas! My name is Serena, and I’m a first time Mom to a 7-week-old little boy, whom I am exclusively breastfeeding with the help of the Ameda Mya Joy breast pump. After the first 4 weeks of establishing my supply and creating a strong latch and breastfeeding relationship with my little one, I wanted to get familiar with pumping!

Introducing the Mya Joy!

To start with, the Mya Joy is incredibly easy to use, even for a complete pumping newbie like me. Plug the pump into power, click the tops onto the flanges and you’re ready to go. The Mya Joy has two modes – stimulation, to help get your milk flowing, and expression to do the actual pumping work. You start in ‘Stimulation’ mode, and as soon as you start to see milk come out, you switch to ‘Expression’ mode with a single button touch! Within each of those modes there are several levels of suction and speed to choose from, and I love how it is controlled through buttons and an illuminated screen rather than dials – less fiddling around. The Mya Joy is a double electric breast pump, but it is easily switched to a single pump if you only want to pump on one side (for example, if you forgot to switch sides all night and come morning you look and feel decidedly lopsided). The flanges that come with the pump are the standard size, which work great for me, but if you have larger or smaller nipples, different sizes are easily found on Amazon. I’m not sure how quiet it is in comparison to other pumps but it seems pretty quiet to me – it couldn’t imagine it ever waking my son!

Good Things Come In Small Packages

The Mya Joy is super compact, without sacrificing any pumping power at all. It’s the perfect size for travel, once we’re all able to do that again. I bought a super cute oversized cosmetics bag which it fits in perfectly – pump, power cord, flanges, bottles and bottle bases, with room for milk storage bags too! My Mom was floored when I showed her how small and compact the Mya is – and rather jealous that something like it didn’t exist in her breastfeeding days! I also love that the Mya Joy has the option to plug in or run on batteries, which is ideal if you need to pump in the car, somewhere without a socket, or, most likely, pump without being attached to a wall (hello crawling stage!). Although I don’t plan on going back to work until my little one is a year old, I can already tell the Mya Joy is going to be perfect for the office too.

The Mya Joy – Speedy & Efficient

I also love how quick my pumping sessions are with the Mya. I only pump once a day at this point as I don’t want to create an oversupply, usually in the morning right after I have fed my little. My pumping sessions never last more than 10 mins, with an average of 7ozs every time! I’ve now got so much milk in the freezer, after only a couple weeks of pumping once a day, that I’m going to become a milk donor! Obviously pumping time and quantity vary from Mom to Mom but I was blown away by how quickly and efficiently the Mya Joy works – instead of 30 minute pumping sessions, I was done in the time it takes my husband to do a diaper change (to be fair, he is new to the whole diaper changing thing). They say a pump can never be more efficient at getting your milk than your baby can, but in the Mya Joy’s case, they might be tied!

The Mya Joy Is A Joy To Use!

I’m super happy with my Mya Joy, and the fact that it comes from Ameda is just the icing on the cake. Knowing that I have a top-quality personal pump for the home and office, that comes from a brand that supplies pumps to hospitals all over the continent, makes me feel really confident in the safety and longevity of my pump. The flanges, tubing, diaphragms, valves, and bottles are all interchangeable with other Ameda pumps, which means that replacements are easy to find online and won’t suddenly be discontinued. My pump actually came with extra diaphragms and valves, which I was super impressed with, and the 2 year warranty on the Mya means that I won’t have to worry about buying another pump during the period I want to breastfeed my son. I also ordered the Ameda Store-And-Pour bags, which are great quality – thick and sturdy, and stand up in the fridge much better than other brands, with a convenient pouring spout! I use the Mya Joy with the Ameda PumpEase nursing bra, which means my pumping sessions are hands-free and I can use that time to have a nice cup of tea and a quiet moment!
