How to Stay Comfortable Pumping
Pumping can take a bit of time, so you’re going to want to make sure you get comfortable! Whether you are at home or at work, it’s important to make sure your environment is relaxed and comfortable to ensure the most milk production.
Here’s our guide to making your pumping experience the most comfortable…
Sit Comfortably
Find the most comfortable chair in your environment that provides plenty of back support. We recommend a recliner if it’s available.
Make Sure You Have Everything You Need
You might to be sitting for a while, so make sure you have everything you need close by. We recommend having a blanket nearby in case you get cold, and maybe some snacks or a cup of tea! A glass of water is always a good idea. Water intake is important for breastfeeding and breast pumping.
Consider Investing in a Pumping Bra
Pumping bras, like PumpEase, make it easier to engage in other activities while pumping, because it leaves your hands free, and will make it easier to stand and pump, or do small tasks like talking on the phone.

Adjust the Pump Settings
Make sure your settings are adjusted to your milk flow needs. Remember, your baby starts breastfeeding with short, fast sucks on the breast. Start with the highest suction that is comfortable and the highest speed setting. Once you experience a letdown (milk coming in) you can decrease the speed to a more comfortable setting.
We recommend choosing a pump with multiple suction and speed settings so you can work with the flow of your milk. The best pumps for this are the Ameda Finesse and the Ameda Purely Yours Ultra. They come with CustomControl, which allows you to mimic the pattern of your baby.
Choose the Right Flange Size
Your breasts are going to change throughout your breastfeeding journey. It is important to have a proper fitting flange. The flange size actually has nothing to do with the size of your breast, it is the size of your nipple that is important. The key is to get a good suction and make sure the nipple moves freely in the tunnel of the flange. If it is too small it will pinch, if it’s too big it may interfere with the suction. Most pump sets come with only one standard size of flange, so it’s a good to get a kit with multiple sizes like the Purely Yours Ultra.
Breast pumping should not be uncomfortable. If you find breast pumping has been uncomfortable, try some of these tips to ensure your pumping experience is tailored to your needs. And remember, your needs will change over time, so regularly check in with yourself to make sure you’re staying comfortable.
PumpEase is available at Best Buy for 15% off February 28-March 5th.
