Everything you know about Breast Pumping

Breast pumping is a great way to make breastfeeding more convenient and accessible no matter what your lifestyle is.

Breast Pumping Basics

Breast pumping is a great way to make breastfeeding more convenient, here’s what you need to know before pumping.

Why Pump?
Pumping can help you return to work, give your partner a chance to bond with the baby through feeding, and make it easier to be apart from your baby for any reason.

How does a breast pump work?
A breast pump extracts milk from the breasts by creating a seal around the breast and the nipple. Then it applies and releases suction to the nipple, which expresses milk from the breast. This suction mimics a baby suckling at the breast. Each suction and release combination is called a cycle.

Do I Need to Clean My Breast Pump After Each Use?
Anything that has come into contact with your milk will need to be cleaned immediately after use such as bottles, valves, flanges and inserts. If you are using a closed system like the Ameda Purely Yours or the Ameda Finesse breast pumps, you will not need to clean the tubing or the tubing adaptor!

What is the difference between open and closed-system breast pumps?
This question comes up a lot when choosing a personal pump. Breast pumps have a wet side and dry side. The wet side comes in contact with milk, whereas the dry does not.

An open system does not have a barrier between the wet side and dry side. Without a barrier, moisture from the humidity produced by pumping warm milk can get into the tubing and breast pump motor. Organisms such as mold, bacteria and viruses thrive and grow in moist environments.

A closed system has a barrier between the wet side and dry side. This barrier helps in preventing moisture from getting into the tubing and pump motor. So, there should be no need to clean and dry the tubing and your breast milk will stay safe.

We recommend a closed system pumps like the Ameda Purely Yours Ultra and the Ameda Finesse, which contain the Ameda HygieniKit® Milk Collection System, the world’s only FDA-cleared viral and bacterial protection barrier.
